Frequently Asked Questions
Automotive relays act as switches, opening and closing electrical circuits as needed to control various components in your vehicle. They utilise a small power signal to trigger an electromagnet which opens or closes a set of high current contacts.
Automotive relays are used to control electrical circuits in your vehicle, such as the thermofan that forces air through your radiator core when the vehicle is slow or stationary, headlights that light the roadway when the sun goes down, the windscreen wipers when it rains and the fuel pump when the engine starts.
Testing automotive relays can be a little bit tricky for the layman to carry out. Testing relays in circuit, especially those that serve as part of your vehicle’s OEM electrical system, can be quite difficult. Sometimes, where possible, it is easier to swap the relay into an adjacent circuit or substitute the relay in the circuit you are fault finding, and checking whether the suspect relay performs in the other circuit, or whether the suspect circuit behaves as normal when relay is swapped out. Alternatively, you can find a relay tester in our wiring accessories category that is suitable for testing all types of conventional automotive relay.
