Air flow meters and mass air flow meters are used in electronically fuel injected engines to measure the amount of air entering the engine. Standard air flow meters are purely volumetric, only measuring the speed or flow rate of air passing into the engine, whereas a mass air flow meter measures both the density and flow rate of the air entering the engine. Air flow meters are used where high accuracy is not required, while mass air flow meters provide far higher accuracy.
