Brake Fluid

Dot 3 and Dot 4 are the most common types of brake fluid used in vehicles. Dot 3 is a glycol-based fluid that is suitable for most vehicles, while Dot 4 is a synthetic fluid that is more resistant to high temperatures and is often used in high-performance vehicles.

Most brake fluids are hygroscopic in nature meaning that they absorb moisture over time (via the brake lines, the atmosphere etc., and from vapourisation under heavy use) which inhibits the fluid's ability to transfer force - the end result is brakes that don't work effectively. You should check your brake fluid level at least once a year and before any long trips. If your brake fluid level is low, it likely indicates a leak in your braking system, which should be inspected by a mechanic. All brake fluids need to be changed at regular intervals; every 1 to 2 years is recommended by most manufacturers, much more frequently if you drive fast, tow loads or need to use heavy brake applications on a regular basis.
