If you are one to give in to the call of the wild and head off the beaten track, then you’re gonna wanna stock up on recovery gear. Here at Automotive Superstore we pride ourselves on offering the very best range of 4WD recovery gear around, and at the lowest possible prices. No matter whether you are newbie novice or a seasoned rock climber, Automotive Superstore has you covered.

One of the most important recovery items we all should carry when heading off the beaten track is a decent jack. Not all jacks are created equal however, and there is a bit to know before choosing the right jack, or jacks, and associated accessories, to suit your unique requirements.

Bottle Jacks are compact yet rather heavy. They are also quite tall when depressed and offer limited reach when extended. This makes bottle jacks less than ideal for offroad use, however you can find our range of bottle jacks in our Lifting and Material Handling category located elsewhere in our catalogue, should this be what you are after. Trolley Jacks can also be found in the Lifting and Material Handling category, and are great for use in the garage and shed when performing upgrades, service and maintenance to your 4WD. Of course you should never get under a vehicle on a jack, use Jack Stands, a spare or similarly object that can take the weight in the event something goes wrong.

An Exhaust Jack is a great solution for lifting your rig when out on the soft stuff like sand and dirt, as it is less likely to dig a hole rather than lift your rig, however these can suffer punctures if not used with care.

A high lift jack offers the extra flexibility of being useful for winching and spreading, although it can be dangerous if not used properly for this reason. These types of jack require aftermarket jacking points like bullbars, side and rear steps.

High lift jacks are quite weight efficient and provide excellent versatility due to their wide range of operation, but they aren’t terribly space efficient and can be quite dangerous if used inappropriately. They also require aftermarket jacking points like a bulbar, side steps and rear steps to be fitted to work. A bonus of high lift jacks is the ability to be useful for winching and spreading. We stock high lift jacks from Bushranger, Hulk 4x4, Kincrome and Mean Mother. Jacking Plates are a must have for use when jacking up your vehicle on soft or uneven ground. We stock options from Bushranger, Hulk 4x4 and Mean Mother. Lift adaptors are another key consideration, of which we options to suit lifting points including wheels, bumpers and bullbars.

We stock recovery bundles from Bushranger and Drivetech 4x4, as well as a Basic Kit and Complete Kit and recovery Board Bundle from Hulk 4x4, a stack of specially constructed solutions from Hulk 4x4 as well as a 5 Piece and 8 Piece 8-Tonne recovery kit and 5 Piece and 8 Piece 11T recovery kit from Mean Mother. We also offer both 8 piece kits with uprated winch extensions and tree trunk protectors in both 8T and 11T variations.

Our Recovery Gear category also contain a number of other must have accessories including heavy duty Recovery Gloves and a Handy Tool to have around should you find yourself in a situation impeded by some sizable flora. We’ve got snatch blocks both Small and Large, drag chains both Small and Large, Tree Trunk Protectors and Recovery Dampers in this, that and the other colour. You’ll also find the obligatory PLB in with our Recovery Gear, which you’ll hopefully never need but shouldn’t head out without.

Everyone should have a decent snatch strap or rope on hand, and replace it as required to avoid disappointment. More challenging tugs might require more efficient use of inertial forces, in which case a Kinetic Rope is the go. A decent Soft Shackle is another must have. A basic tow rope can also be a great benefit to have in your recovery bag, should you need to tow a member of your convoy back to civilisation.

One thing you do not wanna get caught without when out on the soft stuff is a set of Recovery Boards, of which we have stacks for you to choose from. If you do find yourself in need of a set of recovery boards then chances are you’ll also need a Shovel.

Frequently Asked Questions

First thing’s first, ideally you never want to truly be reliant on your recovery gear. Therefore, you should consider having an obligatory UHF radio, a satellite phone and an EPIRB with you at all times. This way should you ever get stick to the point your recovery gear can’t help you, you’ll have a plan B, C and D to fall back on that could well save your life.

With that said, having the right recovery gear on hand when you venture out is of paramount importance. While the specific recover gear you select should be informed by the type of driving you plan to do and the terrain in which you plan to do it, there are a few relatively universal items that we believe should be in everyone’s recovery kit. This includes recovery points and/or tow hooks for attaching your gear to your vehicle, a winch for pulling yourself out of trouble, a snatch strap so your buddy can pull you out of a bind, recovery boards to help you gain traction where there isn’t any, a shovel for digging yourself out of a hole or clearing space under your wheels prior to installing your recovery boards, a jack for replacing your wheel in the case of a flat, a snatch block for redirecting the winch cable to an off axis anchor point so to increase leverage, convenience and/or safety, or to lessen the load placed on the winch during recovery. A soft shackle is also a must, especially if you would like to increase safety and minimise aesthetic and mechanical damage to your recovery points, as is a decent pair of gloves to protect your hands.

Needless to say, you need the gear you need before you need it. The thing to understand about recovery gear is that you never actually know exactly what you’re gonna be relying on and when, so it is best to be prepared with the requisite equipment before even contemplating departure. This is especially true when heading somewhere challenging you’ve never been before. In these cases it is essential you suitably research your intended destination and/or engage the broader 4WD community to learn what you can before you set off.

Our extensive range of recovery gear covers all the major brands including Ark, Bushranger, Carfit, Cargo Mate, Drivetech 4x4, Exitrax, GME, Hard Korr Lighting, Hulk 4x4, Kincrome, Mean Mother, TRED and Runva. If you require any assistance finding the right product to suit your needs please don’t hesitate to reach out to our friendly and knowledgeable staff here at Automotive Superstore.

Recovery gear, like any form of equipment you rely on for your survival, should be thoroughly inspected for signs of wear and tear, with anything looking a bit long in the tooth replaced before it is likely to fail or become a problem. Snatch straps that show signs of stretching, fraying, UV damage or other tell tail signs of deterioration should be replaced immediately, as these can become quite dangerous. Rusty or corroded winch cables are unsightly, become harder to work and can fail somewhat catastrophically. Recovery points or tow hooks that have been bent out of shape have inevitably been weakened, and are also best replaced so to avoid any surprises, or a catastrophically dangerous situation, at the worst possible moment. Generally, use your best judgement while erring on the side of caution when it comes to the condition of your recovery gear.
