Frequently Asked Questions
The price of a car alternator will depend on the make and model of your vehicle. On average, you can expect to pay between $200 and $1500 for a replacement alternator for your car. Which end of that spectrum you find yourself on in this regard will likely depend on the age of the vehicle, with newer and higher spec models costing more due to their more sophisticated design and power requirements.
A car alternator is responsible for charging the battery and providing power to the electrical system. If your alternator fails, your battery will not be able to maintain the voltage of your battery and your electrical system will not function properly.
To test your car alternator, you will need to use a multimeter. You can set the multimeter to the DC voltage setting and connect it to the alternator and then crank the starter motor. If the multimeter reads between 13 and 15 volts, your alternator is working properly.
Testing your car alternator when not in a car is a similar process. Simply connect the multimeter to the alternator and then spin the alternator by hand. If the alternator is functioning you should see a voltage on the multimeter, however the voltage achieved will be far lower as you are unlikely to be able to spin it fast enough to make as much voltage.
