Description

If you drive an older or classic car a distributor cap is an important part of your vehicle’s ignition system. The distributor assembly houses the distributor shaft which is usually driven by a gear on one of the engine’s camshafts or directly by the camshaft itself. The distributor cap contains a carbon brush and contacts that connect, via wires, to the engine’s individual spark plugs. As the distributor shaft rotates an electric current is generated by the shaft spinning against the brush. An exposed metal area of the distributor shaft passes close to (but does not touch) the connections that lead to the spark plugs and the current is able to jump the gap, travel along the wires, and cause the spark plugs to fire.
