What to look for when purchasing a set of jumper cables for my vehicle? How do I tell the difference between low quality and high-performance jumper cables?

While they may seem like little more than a pair of cables with alligator clips at each end, there is a bit to know when purchasing a set of your own to throw in the back of your vehicle. First of all, the quality of the conductors and insulators used in the cables have a huge impact on the performance, longevity and cost of the jumpers, with the cheapest options mostly constructed with aluminium conductors insulated with PVC sheaths. While aluminium can be fine if sized correctly, aluminium is more brittle, and also has a reduced current carrying capacity, when compared to conventional copper conductors. PVC is also less than ideal and, while quite hard wearing it offers little resistance to high temperatures. This can make working with PVC cables a bit of a challenge. At the other end of the quality spectrum you’ll find high quality oxygen free copper conductors wrapped in dual layer insulators consisting of hardwearing PVC wrapped in flexible, abrasion resistant, chemically and UV stable nitrile. Jumper cables made using pure copper insulators and high quality double insulated nitrile sheaths are not cheap, but can provide a lifetime of service provided they are looked after.

Other materials to look out for are aluminium coated copper conductors, which offer excellent conductivity and resistance to corrosion. Copper clad aluminium on the other hand is markedly inferior in almost every measure with the exception of cost, and is best avoided if you’d like to be able to rely on your jumper cables when the time comes to use them. Silicon rubber is also a common insulator type, which is wonderfully flexible however offers little mechanical protection for the conductors, which means they are easily pierced or torn if treated poorly or exposed to rugged conditions.

If you are familiar with the look and feel of PVC verses silicon and nitrile then a physical inspection should be able to tell you what insulator is used. As for the conductors, copper is substantially heavier than aluminium, so the weight of the cable is the best indicator of what is inside.

What are the different types of jumper cables? What are the differences between car jumper cables and heavy-duty jumper cables for trucks?

Most jumper cables consist of a pair of conductors just long enough to bridge the gap between two vehicles when parked nose to nose, terminated on each end by pairs of large alligator clips. Short jumper cables start at a length of approximately 2.5-metres, which is basically the minimum length required to bridge the distance between the batteries in two vehicle. Longer lengths are available, allowing greater flexibility in bridging gaps between the stranded and jumper vehicle. Grabbing longer jumper cables is highly advisable for this reason, especially if yours is an offroad vehicle or a mid-engine vehicle like a work van, however they must necessarily be markedly larger in capacity due to the compounding effect of inline resistance as the cable gets longer. Longer jumper cables capable of transferring the same amount of power as a shorter set will inevitably have a larger cross sectional area, and cost significantly more, due to the increased size of the conductors.

In terms of sizing, how much current you need to start your vehicle largely depends on the the size of the vehicle and the type of engine, but there is a few rough rules of thumb that can be applied. If you have a small to medium sized compact petrol-driven passenger vehicle then you are probably going to be fine using a set of jumper cables rated for 200-Amps of current flow. Medium to large sized petrol-driven passenger vehicles will likely need no more than 400-Amps worth of current capacity. Larger vehicles like pushrod V8s and diesel driven vehicles like dual cabs, 4WDs and light commercial trucks can need 600A plus. Check the current rating of thejumper cables you select prior to purchase to ensure you select a solution that meets the minimum requirements you need for your particular vehicle.

    What are the alternatives?

With the advent of lithium battery technology and the proliferation of modern, lithium battery based portable jump starters, you could be forgiven for thinking you may no longer need to carry a  good set of jumper leads. Jump starters can however deteriorate over time, or fail outright, so even if you have a modern jump starter pack it is highly advisable to keep a set of jumper leads in your vehicle for situations where your jump starter pack doesn’t cut the mustard.

While not a replacement for a trusty set of jumper leads, you should always have a decent battery charger on hand. This is beneficial for several reasons. First of all, a battery charger will help you ensure your battery is returned to a full state of charge after needing a jump, especially if you aren’t gonna be running the vehicle for a long enough period following the jump to fully recharge it. More importantly, a battery charger can be placed on your circuit racer, 4WD, boat, motorhome or other recreational vehicle when left to sit for an extended period, in order to prevent it from needing a jump in the first place.

How do I use your jumper cables to jump start my car or truck?

When jump starting one vehicle with another, there are a few things you can do to minimise the risk of something going wrong. The first thing to do is get the batteries in each vehicle as close together as you can. This usually involves parking nose to nose, as each battery will usually be located in the engine bay. If the battery is on the left side of one vehicle and the right side of the other, it may also be suitable to park the vehicles with the front quarter panels overlapping. Ensure you do not allow the two vehicles to touch, as they must be electrically isolated from each other in order to avoid damage to the sensitive electronics in each vehicles. Once you have the two vehicles positioned, join the positive posts of each vehicle together using the red jumper cable, starting with the vehicle to be jumped, followed by the vehicle which will be doing the jumping. Double, and triple, check your connections prior to attachment in order to avoid any risk of damage. Next attach the black jumper cable to the negative battery post of the jumping vehicle, then attach the other end of the black jumper cable to a solid grounding point on the vehicle to be jump stated. Some modern vehicles will have a designated point to which you should attach the negative jumper lead, otherwise any quality grounding location should do the job. Do not connect the negative jumper lead directly to the negative post of the battery to be jumped, as this will likely result in a hefty spark that can give you a fright, can damage the battery terminal and can even lead to an explosion in the right conditions. If you vehicle doesn’t have a designated grounding point for attachment of jumper cables then look for a clean and unpainted bolt or similar metal point you can attach the alligator clip to. A shock absorber mounting point is often a good option, if a better one cannot be found. Check to make sure the cables are routed in such a way they do not obstruct any moving parts like the engine belts or thermofan. Next start the jumping vehicle, and leave it running for several minutes.

    Why Rockford Fosgate

Rockford Fosgate was born when Jim Fosgate committed himself to addressing the mismatch between the natural sensitivity curve of the human ear and the speakers found in early consumer electronics. In pursuit of a more desirable response curve that is more pleasing to the eye and achieves more equal loudness, Jim went on to create what is now known as the ‘Punch EQ’, which provides up to 18dB of bass boost centres at 45Hz as well as a hinge filter starting at 1kHz and providing up to 12dB of treble boost at 20kHz. This established the type of EQ curve we are all familiar with today. Such is the impact and influence of Jim Fosgate.

    The Rockford Fosgate Range

Rockford is an all-encompassing brand able to provide everything you need from one end to the other, including all the ancillaries and accessories you need to complete a properly well resolved audio system. Pretty much the only thing Rockford Fosgate doesn’t do is in dash source units, which is a segment of the market already so well catered for they need not lend a hand.

    Speakers

Rockford Fosgate have one of the most expansive ranges of speakers on the market today. It is so large in fact that it can be a bit daunting to navigate, but there’s a simple rule to know for Rockford Fosgates entire range to make perfect sense. Rockford divides their ranges into three categories as follows: Prime = Good, Punch = Better and Power = Best. So, Prime will comprise the base model speakers, subwoofers and amplifiers, while Punch represents the midpoint and Power is the top end stuff.

    Subwoofers

Subwoofers is where Rockford Fosgate truly shines brightest, with myriad options to choose from regardless of whether you are after a passive loaded subwoofer, active loaded subwoofer, spare wheel type enclosure or raw subwoofer driver, whether that me slimline shallow mount or otherwise. No matter what your unique budget limitations, installation requirements and listening preferences, Rockford Fosgate has a subwoofer to perfectly suit your needs.

    Amplifiers

As you would expect, amplifiers are another category where Rockford Fosgate offer you more choice than anyone else, with their range covering all power levels from factory upgrade right through to SPL level madness. Refreshingly, Rockford Fosgate haven’t tipped all their eggs into the class D basket just yet, offering a proper choice of amplifier topology that ranges from sound quality focused class AB through to the very latest high efficiency class D designs.

    OEM Integration

Responding to the advent of HVAC integration and the ever-increasing quality and functionality of OEM fitted source units, with their native support for handfree phone integration, apple carplay and the like, Rockford Fosgate have a selection of plug-n-play OEM interface harnesses, line level converters, signal processors and digital signal processors designed to interface with just about any combination of factory and aftermarket components you could envisage or require, and provide whatever level of signal manipulation you could possibly need.

    Accessories

Rockford Fosgate’s installation accessories game is tight too, with enough ancillaries and accessories to sink a ship including speaker grills, fuses, fuse holders, circuit breakers, RCA cables, power wiring kits and bolstering capacitors, ensuring you need not source a mixed bag of gear from a motley crew of brands in order to create the perfect system. With Rockford you can have Rockford from one end to the other.

    Marine

Rockford Fosgate is also big in marine. Unlike in mobile, Rockford have found room to innovate and provide a broader choice of source units in a wider range of form factors for the marine market, which need not adhere to the din standard which remains to the automotive market. In this regard Rockford Fosgate offer a quartet of compact digital receivers suitable for panel mounting just about anywhere, and into a circular home. There’s even an ultra-compact model capable of slotting straight into a standard 2-inch instrument gauge hole which employs the same type of u-clamp used to secure standard instrument gauges, making installation into even the most space deprived cockpit as easy as pie. Rockford Fosgate even offers a hide-away source unit with all the features and wireless compatibility you could want, providing a perfect for those who want a completely stealth system, don’t have the space for a head unit, need something that is completely sealed away from the salt and spray or simply would rather command and utilise their sound system from their mobile device. For those with a legacy din slot to fill, Rockford Fosgate offers a fully-featured multi-zone capable din-compatible source featuring an oversized faceplate with large multi-colour screen and oversized analogue volume knob for easy control, along with all the fruit you would expect from Rockford Fosgate including their signature Punch EQ, a full complement of digital crossovers, EQ and canbus interface for superior integration with your factory gear.

Speaker wise, Rockford Fosgate has ample selection t ensure you’ll find the drivers you need no matter the type or size of your vessel. For those after maximum value for money there is the Prime, Punch and M0 ranges, all in popular 6.5-inch sizes. Moving up the rankings, the M1 series is comprised of a list of high performance coaxials ranging in size from 6 to 8-inch, in your choice of black or white finish and each fitted with RGB LEDs supporting Rockford Fosgates Colour Optix technology, allowing you to customise the illumination to suit your personal preferences and vessel colour scheme. Topping out the good, better, best categories is the M2 series, covering sizes from conventional 6.5-inch to enormous 10-inch 2-way coaxials, Also available in your choice of black or white and supporting Rockford Fosgates Colour Optix technology. The 8s and 10s are also available in Rockford Fosgates loaded enclosures, making them easy as pie to fit to your wake tower. Add-on tweeters are also available for larger vessels and systems that might require a bit more cowbell.

Filling the bottom octave out on the water can be a challenge, but is easily overcome with more cone area thanks to Rockford Fosgates range of subwoofers. Designed to be pairs with their M1 and M2 series speakers, these hefty air movers and available in 8-12-inch sizes and feature the same Optix RGB technology, so you can uniformly colour match your entire system with ease.

Amplification is no different, selection abounds to suit all manner of preferences.  The M2 series provides ample power in a compact package thanks to the latest class d digital amplification. Punch is for the more discerning system builder. Understanding that trusty old class ab output stages still reign supreme for full range duties while class d is king when it comes to the bottom octave, the Punch range of marine amplifiers includes a conventional 4-channel full range class ab and a large monoblock class d for larger systems, as well as well resolved 5-channel integrating a quality class ab 4-channel and suitably matched class d subwoofer channel. More manufacturers should be building amplifiers like these. Rockford Fosgate also offer the M5 series and Power series, consisting of a selection of compact class ad amplifiers with superior waterproof and dust ingress rating, providing ultra-high efficiency and added protection against the elements. The M5 series also features Rockford Fosgates Element Ready technology, which detects and indicates any clipping that occurs in the output to help you match amplifier and speaker to ensure you always enjoy crystal clear sound, no matter how loud you like it.
