The Toyota HiAce SBV is a memorable chapter in Australia’s van landscape, offering the trusted HiAce formula with a “semi bonneted” design that set it apart from the cab over models before it. Popular through the late 1990s and early 2000s, the SBV appealed to couriers, tradies, shuttle operators and large families thanks to its practical cabin, strong Toyota reliability and easy loading layout. Its forward seating position, wide sliding side door and boxy cargo area made it a dependable workhorse, while petrol and diesel engine options gave buyers flexibility for urban delivery or long distance use.

One interesting piece of trivia is that the SBV name literally reflected its Semi Bonneted Van construction, a design move influenced by changing safety expectations and the need for improved crash protection. While some traditional HiAce fans preferred the flat front look, the SBV earned a loyal following because it remained tough, simple to maintain and highly adaptable. Many were converted into camper vans, mobile workshops or people movers, making them a familiar sight at job sites, markets and coastal campsites across Australia.
