Bilstein was founded more than 140 years ago commencing operations in Ennepetal, Germany in 1873. Initially the company made window fittings and set up its own strip iron rolling mill in 1919 to ensure the quality of the raw materials that it was making its products out of. Dedication to quality would be something that would run through the Bilstein business for decades to come.

By the 1920s Bilstein had begun dabbling with nickel and chrome plating. It was from here that the company moved into the automotive parts world by producing the first chrome-plated bumpers for series production vehicles. They also manufactured the jacks used to change tires at the side of the road and in mechanic shops. The 1950s saw Bilstein debut the world’s first monotube gas pressure shock absorber and in 1957 Mercedes-Benz became the first car manufacturer to include Bilstein shocks as an OEM part on their vehicles.
