Description

A vehicle’s fuel pump is responsible for moving fuel from the tank to the engine where it can be burned. The fuel pump’s goal is to deliver the correct amount of fuel to the carburettors or injectors as they require it. Carburetted engines often use mechanical fuel pumps located outside the fuel tank whereas engines equipped with electronic fuel injection usually use electric pumps located inside the tank itself. One symptom of a faulty fuel pump is ‘sputtering’ when the engine is under load (trying to accelerate) because the pump cannot supply the quantity of fuel that the engine needs. Fuel pumps can be damaged by letting the tank run low too often. Gravity helps the pump to function and when the fuel in the tank gets below a certain level the pump must suck up fuel by itself. That fuel also lubricates and cools the pump, so you want to keep plenty of it in the tank. Leaving gasoline in your vehicle for a long time is bad for the pump’s health as water separates out from the fuel and eats away at the metal components of the pump.
